Year 11 students have been working on a forensics unit as part of their BTEC science course. For their coursework, they had to sketch a crime scene. This particular crime was a murder in the school library!!! The students had the opportunity to role play as a SOCO (scene of crime officer). They needed to assess the scene, work out what was potential evidence, why it might be useful and how to collect and store the evidence without contaminating it. The students gained good insight into the work of a forensics officer during this interactive and highly interesting lesson. They learned a great deal while evaluating the processes and problems that may be encountered when processing a crime scene. This lesson was followed up by doing practical  examinations on some of the evidence to see if they could identify the murderer.  It was just like CSI!

This week we will be looking at some different themes for our VLE Blog. If you notice that it looks different, please comment on this post and leave your thoughts and ideas…

Brought up in Snodland, Nathan Outlaw attended Snodland Primary School  and Holmesdale Technology College and played football for Snodland Nomads. He knew he wanted to be a chef long before he left school and took Food Technology as an option lesson.  He worked at The Freemasons Arms and the golf course at weekends and eventually began a two year course at Thanet College, Broadstairs, travelling by train for over two hours every day. Nathan’s first full time job was at the Intercontinental Hotel on Hyde Park Corner in London.  After stints with Gary Rhodes, Eric Chavot and John Campbell he decided to move to Cornwall to work with Rick Stein, partly because he wanted to do some surfing!  In his first year with Rick he was made to gut and prepare fish for much of the time but he is glad of this now as he realises it was great training for the future.  Nathan opened his first restaurant, ‘The Black Pig,’ in 2003 and was promptly awarded his first Michelin star.  He was 25.  Unfortunately, the venture did not succeed, but this did not stop him and in 2007 he opened the fine dining ‘Restaurant Nathan Outlaw’ in Fowey, re-gaining his Michelin star.  He followed this with Nathan Outlaw’s Seafood and Grill in 2009 and re-located Restaurant Nathan Outlaw to the same venue in 2010.  Restaurant Nathan Outlaw was voted  The Good Food Guide’s ‘Best Fish Restaurant in UK’ in 2011, The Good Food Guide’s ‘5th Best Restaurant in UK’ in 2012 and now proudly boasts 2 Michelin stars.  It is the only fish restaurant in the world to hold 2 Michelin stars.  Nathan makes regular appearances on TV and will soon be competing in the south west heat of ‘Great British Menu’.  He is also due to appear on ‘Saturday Kitchen’ on 19th May and is in demand for interview by writers of magazine food pages.  Nathan’s first book, ‘Nathan Outlaw’s British Seafood’ is published on 10th May.  In addition, Nathan is often asked to have input into both commercial and environmental concerns and is an avid supporter of the Responsible Fishing Scheme, championing sustainability in the fishing industry.

All of this is fantastic success for a former Holmesdale student.  Just think what you could do.  We might be writing an article right here about you and your success one day!

You can learn more about Nathan and his restaurant on his website: www.nathan-outlaw.com.

Nathan says ‘If you work hard, believe in yourself and are willing to learn from people who are experts at what they do, you can achieve anything’.

Once again, Unit Radio took to the stage and brought their latest radio play “The Scattered Path” to life! It proved to be a great success as the audience roared with laughter at the many, many witty moments. See the crew of Unit Radio in action below.

Our Performing Arts class, taught by Mr. Craig, went on a trip to ‘The O2’ in London for The British Music Experience on Tuesday 1st May. The purpose of the trip was to gain further knowledge of the history of music and how it affected our lives in political, social and influential ways.

We researched many things including how popular music trends shaped how we teenagers are today, from clothing to attitude. We saw the progression from influential bands such as The Beatles and The Punk Movement as well as Dizzie Rascal and N-Dubz.

The British Music Experience offered many different interactive activities such as films, games and music fact files. We were each given a SMARTticket which we could use to scan various different pieces of information that will later be stored on a website for further use and research.

The British Music Experience included two workshops, one on the progression of music and its impact on the teenagers of the ’50s and ’60s and the other, a live concert experience where we where shown what it’s like to be in a concert/rave.

The day was very beneficial to our studies of BTEC Performing Arts (Music Technology) and the day was overall fun as well as educational. I would like to thank Mr. Craig and Mrs Pink on behalf of the class, and say thank you for organising and taking us to this event.

Liam Holmes: Year 10 Performing Arts

Hi, we are three Performing Arts students studying our final year of our A levels. We created this short film for our Site Specific and Movement units. We were set the brief to create a piece at The Malling School under the title ‘Waiting’. We have explored movements, characters and locations associated with ‘waiting’ in a school environment.

We would appreciate it if you would spare a minute to complete our questionnaire as we need to collect our audiences reaction. Any comments would be gratefully received and prove extremely useful to our course work.

Thank you for your time

Holmesdale Technology college have dominated Maidstone Schools Football this season. Three out of the five cups have been won by the school, with the Year 9, 10 and 11 teams all successful. All teams were also undefeated in all of their league games, winning each match.

The Year 9 team beat MGS 6-0 in the final, with a Ryan Crandley hat-trick taking his goal tally to an outstanding 35 for the season. Crandley was also on target for the Year 10 side, which beat MGS 5-4 on penalties in a tight and entertaining game. The Year 11 side signed off their football at Holmesdale with a comfortable 3-1 victory over St Simon Stock. The game was hampered by the horrendous weather conditions, but Holmesdale led from early on in the game and managed to see out the victory and retain the Year 11 cup.

Head of PE Mr Downey said “For three year groups even to reach the final was a fantastic achievement for the school. All the boys work hard every year, but this year was in a different class altogether. I couldn’t ask for more from any of them. The commitment, sportsmanship and team spirit they have all shown throughout the season has been brilliant – they were a credit to the school.  They have certainly learnt that hard work pays off – and they can’t wait till next season to defend their titles!”

BAS is our new school logo here at Holmesdale.  You’ll soon find him popping up all over school.  His purpose is very clear.  He’s there to encourage us all to Believe in ourselves, Aspire to do better and then to Succeed.

42 students at HTC from years 8, 9 and 10 spent an exhausting but exhilarating 3 days in Paris at the weekend. From a 5am departure on Friday to a 8:30pm return on Sunday night, they barely paused for breath.  Trip highlights were – a visit to the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa, taking the fastest lift in Europe to the top of Paris’ only skyscraper for an amazing 360° degree view of the city by night, a one-hour boat trip along the Seine with commentary, and visiting the ‘Cité des Sciences’ and ‘Exploradome’ science museums. Mrs Riley said that students behaved very well indeed and made genuine efforts to speak French.

Sixth-formers should be given a chance to try out teaching, to encourage the brightest into the profession after they finish university, say MPs.

More should be done to attract, train and retain top teachers, the Commons Education Select Committee says.

It says offering a taste of life at the other end of the classroom could help teenagers see the benefits of the job.
