The Beat Project

At the start of October, 24 students from year 9 and above were specially selected to take part in a workshop run by the Beat Project. Guidance managers identified students who had 100% attendance last year, or had made significant improvements in their behaviour or attendance to take part in this special project. The Beat Project sent in two musicians – Pete Chapman (aka Urb ‘n’ Dub) and Matt Twigg (aka Harry Shotta) to work with the students combining their music skills with issues that teenagers may face.

On the first day, the focus of the project was ‘smoking’ and students were asked to work as a group to write a song. They decided to write the lyrics from the point of view of trying to persuade a close friend to give up smoking. Matt gave a demo of freestyle MC-ing, with students shouting out words that he then used in his lyrics. This was amazing to listen to and really inspired the   students. Pete then helped create a track for the backing using ideas given by students. Once the lyrics for the song had been written, the lines were split up amongst the ones that felt brave enough to Mc and the song was recorded.

On the second day, the focus was to create a radio show about alcohol. Students worked in a similar way to the first day, creating a track using Reason software and then writing lyrics for their song. Finally, they interviewed each other about their experiences of alcohol and this was recorded to make the radio show.
