Holmesdale Technology College formalised its
partnership with The Malling School to form The Malling Holmesdale
Federation in February 2007. This means that we can maintain the
separate ethos and atmosphere of each school and offer our students a
wealth of benefits from increased funding, including world class newly
built facilities, leading edge, specialised technology and equipment and
highly trained, enthusiastic and innovative staff.
All this is having a very positive effect on our results.
The number of students gaining at least 5 GCSEs at grades A to C,
including English and Maths, has more than doubled at The Malling School
and increased by more than a third at Holmesdale.

This success was formally recognised by Ofsted in December 2008 when
inspectors found that the partnership was having a positive effect in
all areas, including achievements and standards, teaching and learning
and leadership and management.
The ‘outstanding strategic leadership’ of Ian Hobson, Executive
Federation Principal, and his federation performance team was also
praised.
Mr Hobson says,
“What this means to a parent and his or her child is that they will have
access to the very latest technology and equipment while at school.
Not only this, but their teachers will be using the latest techniques as
a result of being able share best practice and access the latest
training. This can only continue to be of significant benefit.”
The Federation has a single board of
Governors, chaired by Richard Sams MBE.
The views of parents of children at both schools are represented.
Governors have ensured that there is a computer for every student at
both schools through
wireless internet facilities throughout both schools. Innovative
teaching and learning technology includes interactive whiteboards and
projectors, use of video and the very latest VLE. Both schools
have also been positioned at the heart of their communities, supporting
local improvements and welcoming local people through their doors for a
variety of events and activities. Achieving
Trust Status
in March 2009, was the natural next step.
Each of the schools in the
Federation has specialist status.
At Holmesdale the specialism is technology, encompassing ICT,
design and engineering. At
The Malling School the specialism is Sport and Science.
This means that whilst all the usual curriculum subjects are
covered, federation students have the additional opportunity to follow
individual learning pathways which will equip them for careers in the 21st
century.
